Spain: Authorities destroy Europe's biggest cannabis plantation spread across 166 acres
Times Now News Wednesday 13 Apr 2022 Spanish authorities on Wednesday destroyed the biggest cannabis plantation in Europe. The plantation was located in the rural northern region of Navarre and was spread across 11 fields covering 166 acres of land. As part of the operation, the Spanish police damaged 415,000 hemp plants worth 100 million euros, reported news agency Reuters. Apart from this, around 50 tonnes of the plants were being dried in a warehouse for processing into cannabidiol (CBD), the report said. CBD is a non-psychoactive compound that is used to treat anxiety, insomnia and other diseases. Notably, CBD sales and consumption are legal across the country and several parts of Europe. However, cannabis cultivation is prohibited in Spain except for industrial purposes. The police arrested three people during the operation in connection with the cultivation of cannabis. The cultivation reportedly began in mid-2021. As per the Guardia Civil force, the owner of the farm reportedly had taken permission to plant cannabis for industrial purposes. But later, it was found out that he was cultivating cannabis for exporting to Italy and Switzerland so that cannabis could be processed into CBD. As per reports, Spanish cops destroy over one million plants a year and these plants are mostly in the Catalonia region of the country.
