On Tuesday, the Lithuanian parliament voted in favour to proceed with amendments to decriminalise the possession of small amounts of cannabis.

According to the draft amendments, possessing small amounts of cannabis, including its oil, resin, or extracts, be punishable by a warning or a fine between 30 and 250 euros. Currently, possessing cannabis is a criminal offensive.

Seventy MPs voted in favour, 46 against and 10 abstained. The amendments will now be discussed in the Seimas committees.

If passed, the Health Ministry would decide on what amount constitutes a small amount. Offenders may be directed to take part in programmes on drug prevention.

People who hand over drugs voluntarily would be exempted from administrative liability.
