UK: Smokers gather at Castle Park for 420 'weed day' event in Bristol Yvonne Deeney Bristol Post Thursday 20 Apr 2023 There was even a barber who was offering haircuts beneath a gazebo. The ‘happening’ is understood to have its origins almost 50 years ago in California, but however it started, April 20 has become an international ‘counterculture holiday’, expressed now by smoking cannabis in public and focussing on legalising the drug - particularly at 4.20pm. This year, thanks to the sunny weather, hundreds had already shown up for the celebration before 4pm and it is continuing to fill up. Our reporter estimated that by 5pm around 1,000 looked to have gathered in the park, which is a busy cut-through for commuters on their walk or cycle home. Individuals who come to police attention for simple possession of drugs will usually be dealt with by a referral to the drug education programme, with no criminal justice sanction." The force has not yet confirmed if it will continue to take the same approach this year. One person attending for the first time, Thai, told Bristol Live: "I'm here because it's a good social. "If you're at other countries where it's legal, they get tax and it's safer because it's regulated. Whether it's legal or not people are going to do it anyway. By banning it you just make people want to do it more." Louie and Saunders cycled in from Nailsea this morning and have been at Castle Park since 1pm. Louis said: "It's much bigger this year than last year, there wasn't music last year. Everyone's here for a good time, it's all safe. Bristol's the best city for this reason, you wouldn't get this anywhere else." Saunders said: "There's no trouble here. Life, love and unity." Anthonell Peccoo set up the Second Coming in 2018 and is based in Happy Tat on Stokes Croft. It's the first 420 event he's attended having missed it in previous years. The barber had planned to start cutting hair in Castle Park every Wednesday but decided to come on a Thursday for the event. "In comparison to alcohol than any other substance, there are no fights caused by weed." https://www.bristolpost.co.uk/news/bristol-news/gallery/smokers-gather-castle-park-420-8371598
