UK: Letter: 'Cannabis laws may as well not exist'

Bournemouth Echo

Wednesday 12 Jul 2023

THE recent police raids on almost industrial-sized cannabis plantations in Dorset come as no surprise.

For a several years now it has become increasingly common, while walking or using buses - almost anywhere in the conurbation - to be enveloped in a cloud of secondhand pot smoke.

Cannabis is illegal in the UK. The maximum penalty for possession of the Class B drug is five years in prison and magistrates can impose a fine of up to £2,500.

But given the widespread, open use of the drug in public - that law might as well not exist.
