US: California Is One Step Closer to Legalizing Amsterdam-Style Cannabis Cafes (Again) Dianne de Guzman SF Eater Tuesday 21 May 2024 A bill legalizing cannabis cafes in California is going to the Senate after the state Assembly approved it in a 49-4 vote on Monday, May 20, the Los Angeles Times reports. Assembly Bill 1775 will give local government the authority to allow cannabis clubs to make and sell non-cannabis food and nonalcoholic drinks. It will allow cannabis cafes to host live music and performances, according to the Times. Currently, customers can consume cannabis at dispensaries, but the businesses are not allowed to sell non-cannabis products such as food. Assemblymember Matt Haney of San Francisco introduced the bill saying it “supports our legal small businesses that just want to diversify their businesses and do the right thing,” the Times reports, and allows them to compete with the illegal drug market. Gov. Gavin Newsom previously vetoed an earlier version of the bill last year, due to smoke-free workplace protections, but Haney says this new bill will separate cannabis consumption from other work areas. https://sf.eater.com/2024/5/21/24161679/california-cannabis-cafe-ab-1775
