If you think about Uber Eats you think about delivering food or drinks and other essential things

But starting Tuesday, customers are now able to order cannabis.

“It’s awesome news actually, it seems like it is gone far long way now,” said one Edmontonian CityNews spoke with.

Alberta is the third province to implement the system after B.C. in 2023 and Ontario in 2022.

“Well, I’m honestly surprised it took as long as it did.”

NUMO Cannabis is the first retailer in Edmonton to use the platform. Daniel Nguyen, the owner, says this will help small businesses reach more people in Edmonton

“Everybody knows Uber Eats, and I think that it will help us get visibility on our businesses and help us expand our reach. Right now our storefront services our neighbourhoods but now this allows us to service other areas in the city,” said Nguyen.

UBER tells CityNews they are following provincial laws, making sure staff are licensed and trained to handle and deliver cannabis to the customer.

“The main thing is making sure that the local cannabis retailer has provincially certified staff who are able to deliver cannabis safely to someone’s house – – It’s not delivery people that would deliver your food from a restaurant but this will be provincially certified staff,” said Keerthana Rang, a spokesperson of UBER Canada.

Alberta Gaming Liquor and Cannabis say this is legal because the store still has to deliver the cannabis themselves and not just regular Uber Drivers. Customers must also verify their age from the app and show their ID to the delivery driver.
