UK: Passive drugs dogs go on patrol in West Kent
Kent County Constabulary
Tuesday 09 Jan 2001 Passive sniffer dogs have been working on the streets of West Kent for the first time. Two of the dogs were used in Tonbridge and Tunbridge Wells on the evening of 1 December to sniff the air around people queuing to get into local pubs and clubs, to detect whether they were carrying any illegal substances. In all about 150 people were checked, and two people were cautioned after a quantity of cannabis was seized. PC Christopher Kidd, who was involved in the initiative, said: "This is the first time we've taken the dogs out to detect the possession of illegal substances in West Kent, and it's something we plan to do on a regular basis in the future." "People need to be aware that if they do try to take drugs with them when they go out then there's a good chance they'll find themselves literally sniffed out. This is a tactic which has been introduced with great success in other parts of the county and we plan to come down hard on the people we catch," he added. Local licensees have shown their support for the initiative, and the owners of several pubs and clubs were more than happy to assist, including The Opera House and Yates Wine Bar in Tunbridge Wells and Ice night-club in Tonbridge.
