Nigerian thirst for top-notch Canadian cannabis grows

Local police just seized 63.75 kilograms on indica bud from a container that came from Montreal

High-grade Canadian marijuana is becoming increasingly popular in Nigeria, and it comes at a high cost.

But, that high price tag is what is currently driving an increasing number of illegal shipments making their way into the African nation, or attempting to.

This week, the country’s National Drug Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) seized a shipment containing 63.75 kilograms of indica cannabis flower.

“The price of the imported drugs is far higher, and that is the reason drug traffickers are desperate to smuggle the drugs into the country,” NDLEA Commander, Mitchell Ofoyeju, told local media.

This most recent package of illicit bud was discovered in the trunk of a Toyota Venza crossover SUV and inside multiple mattresses.

“The reasons for the growing preference for Canadian-grown cannabis include a penchant for exotic products, higher potency and the legalization of recreational use of cannabis in Canada,” Ofoyeju added.

The man who received the shipment is currently being questioned by authorities.

Border patrol agents have been staying busy in both countries

Only a couple of months ago as 2024 was winding to a close, the Canada Border Services Agency seized a massive shipment of illicit cannabis bound for the northwest African state. It was stuffed inside 59 sports bags and weighed in at 1,384.5 kilograms.

Moreover, Nigerian police seized hundreds of kilograms of Canadian marijuana hidden inside used vehicles being sent overseas in 2023, all of which originated from Ontario. Discoveries like this were made on at least five occasions that year.

The frequent rate of these occurrences highlights Canada’s stature as one of the world’s best growers.

The “Canadian Loud” cultivar/strain is particularly popular among Nigerians. Many of these illegal deliveries contain large baggies of this type of weed.

Throughout 2023, the NDLEA reported seizing 1.2 million grams of the illegal commodity nationwide.

Nigeria is known for having extremely strict drug laws. Getting caught with a baggie of grass can potentially get you 12 years in prison.

But, according to one popular X user, if you have enough money the cops will just turn a blind eye to your consumption.
