South Africa could allow possession of over 2,000 joints-worth of weed

South Africans may soon be allowed to possess enough cannabis to make around 2,300 standard joints, according to proposed new rules.

Draft regulations were issued on February 2, proposing that the amount of cannabis possessed by an “adult person in a private place for private purpose” may be granted up to 750 grams.

According to News24, this would equate to around 2,344 standard joints per person, based on 2016 research looking into their average weight, which was found to be around 0.32g per joint.

To put this into perspective, Snoop Dogg’s personal blunt roller (PBR) previously claimed that they make between 75 and 100 blunts a day for the rapper, though these are commonly made using entirely cannabis, without any tobacco.

News24 reports that the amount of weed that South Africans may be able to carry is the equivalent of around 6.4 joints a day for a year, or around 195 per month.

The Department of Justice and Consultation Development is now offering “interested parties” the opportunity to submit written comments on the draft regulations, which must be done by March 5.

Proposed regulations also detail rules around the transportation of cannabis, with a 750g limit on its transit, though users "must not handle or inspect” the cannabis while it’s being transported.

Cannabis was decriminalised in South Africa in 2018 after a panel voted in unanimous favour of lifting the prohibition of the drug. It allowed adults to possess, cultivate and smoke weed in “private”.
