There may be a light at the end of the Cannabis tunnel in Nebraska.

The Medical Cannabis Commission is waiting for the legislature to pass a bill related to a medical cannabis program.

The bill 1235 is a key step toward regulating a functional system for medical cannabis. The bill is led by State Senator Rick Holdcroft of Bellevue, chair of the General Affairs Committee. If passed the bill would give the regulatory commission the ability to set fees and raise revenue. Funding set aside in LB1071 would set the state’s budget adjustment which would provide funding for tasks such as hiring staff.

Medical Cannabis Commissioner Lorelle Mueting of Gretna, is the interim commission chair and says LB1235 is the first step to get a dedicated staff who could help the commission have a viable program.

In 2024 voters passed a ballot measure with sixty seven percent of the vote.

In the same election seventy one percent of voters legalized possession of up to five ounces of medical cannabis for patients and their caregivers with a health care practitioners recommendation.
