Nearly 900 people across Cumbria are now receiving prescribed medical cannabis treatment through Releaf, a private clinic.

According to new figures, 899 patients are currently receiving medical cannabis treatment from the clinic.

Of these, 292 live in Carlisle, while 161 are in Barrow.

Smaller numbers are found in towns including Workington, Kendal, Penrith, Whitehaven, and Wigton.

Medical cannabis has been legal in the UK since 2018.

Despite this, awareness remains low, with many people still unaware that it can be legally prescribed through specialist clinics for certain conditions.

Conditions commonly treated include chronic pain, anxiety, depression, sleep disorders, neurological conditions, and women’s health issues.

Patients begin with an online eligibility assessment, sharing their medical history and details of previous treatments.

Those deemed suitable are invited to consult with a doctor remotely.

If approved, they may then receive a prescription for medical cannabis medication.

This could include dried cannabis flower for vaporisation, as well as oils, capsules, or other formats.

Smoking medical cannabis remains illegal in the UK.

Medications are dispensed through pharmacies and delivered to patients’ homes.

Releaf patient Peter Last, from Cumbria, said: "Cannabis has helped me approach things in a more relaxed way.

"Before, I would fixate on tiny details… now, I don’t get stuck on them as much.

"Beyond that, my general mood and outlook have improved.

"I’ve become a more gracious person, and my relationship with my wife has got even better.”

A spokesperson for Releaf said: "Stories like Peter’s help illustrate why increasing numbers of people across Cumbria are exploring alternative treatment options to help manage long-term conditions."
