US: Cannabis bill that would allow recreational sales in Paramus advances

A bill approved by the state Assembly would allow medical cannabis dispensaries to get a recreational license without need for town approval.

If it becomes law, it could bring recreational cannabis to Paramus, one of two towns in the state that allow for medical dispensaries but not recreational ones.

The bill, which also revises restrictions on hemp beverages, was passed 47-20 on May 18 and sent to the Senate, which has no scheduled date for a vote yet.

Business owners applying for a Class 5 adult use cannabis retailer license for the same location as a medical dispensary would “not require additional municipal review," according to the legislation.

That could directly affect Paramus and Cranbury, the two municipalities that have medical dispensaries but do not allow recreational licenses. As of April 17, there were more than 300 cannabis dispensaries across the state, according to the New Jersey Cannabis Regulatory Commission.
