French authorities, working in coordination with Morocco’s police (DGSN), have dismantled a cross-border drug trafficking network and seized nearly 2.7 tonnes of cannabis destined for the French market, according to a statement by France’s Gendarmerie issued on Friday.

Led by investigators from the Research Section of Lille, the operation targeted a network suspected of smuggling cannabis from Morocco into France using maritime and land routes.

Coordinated raids at four locations across France on May 24 led to the seizure of 2,692 kilograms of drugs, mainly cannabis, hidden in a vehicle arriving through the port of Sète.

Two suspects were arrested, including the driver of the vehicle carrying the drugs and an alleged logistics coordinator believed to have overseen the shipment’s distribution.

Authorities also seized €34,000 (about $39,600) in cash and a vehicle during searches in the Île-de-France region.

Investigators said part of the shipment was intended for distribution in the Lille metropolitan area.

The case began on April 13 after prosecutors in Lille opened a preliminary investigation into a suspected organized trafficking network involved in importing cannabis from Morocco.

French authorities said the probe benefited from close cooperation with Moroccan security services.

Prosecutors opened a formal judicial investigation on Thursday into charges including participation in a criminal organization, organized drug importation, and the transportation, possession, and distribution of narcotics.

Both suspects have been formally charged. One has been placed in pretrial detention, while the second remains in custody pending a court hearing scheduled for June 2.
