UK: Maldon: Drug habit to combat depression
This Is Essex Tuesday 23 Jan 2001 A 31-year-old Maldon man smokes cannabis daily to combat depression brought on by the unlawful killing of his mother 20 years ago, a court heard. Unemployed Jimmy Smith, of Edward Bright Close, pleaded guilty to possessing 17gms of cannabis with a street value of between 60 pounds to 80 pounds when he appeared before Chelmsford magistrates last Thursday. He was fined 70 pounds and ordered to pay 55 pounds prosecution costs. Denise Holland, prosecuting, said police, acting on a search warrant, raided Smith's home on January 10 and discovered the cannabis which he claimed was for his own use. Smith had been fined for possessing cannabis last June. Peter Butterfield, mitigating, said Smith was living on incapacity benefit and had suffered severe depression since the age of 10 when his mother was unlawfully killed. Mr Butterfield said Smith smoked cannabis daily to combat his anxiety and depression and was seeing a therapist at St Peter's Hospital in Maldon. "He takes it to alleviate his medical condition and if and when he is given a substitute be will stop taking the cannabis. He is likely to continue using the drug," said Mr Butterfield.
