Malaysia: Man jailed 7 years, 10 strokes for cannabis possession Dawn Chan Straits Times Thursday 11 Jun 2026 Judge Datuk Aslam Zainuddin sentenced Sali Sangsangan after he pleaded guilty to a reduced charge of cannabis possession. The charge was reduced from trafficking following a representation by his lawyer, M. Manoharan, to the Attorney-General's Chambers. Sali committed the offence at 11.20pm in a hotel room along Jalan Mesui, Bukit Bintang, on March 17 last year. The offence, framed under Section 6 of the Dangerous Drugs Act and punishable under Section 39A(2) of the same Act, carries a life sentence or a jail term of not less than five years and not fewer than 10 strokes of the cane. Dressed in a white T-shirt and jeans, Sali entered his plea from the dock. In mitigation, Manoharan urged the court to impose a sentence of five years and 10 strokes of the rotan for his client, who is unmarried and has no dependants. He said Sali, a Sabahan of Filipino descent, had faced hardships in life, prompting his move to Kuala Lumpur in search of better opportunities. "He was originally charged under Section 39B for trafficking because of the quantity of drugs involved, but he managed to rebut the presumption of trafficking as the cannabis was intended for his own consumption. "The sentence should be rehabilitative rather than punitive. I believe the sentence I have suggested is sufficient as he cooperated with the police and there was no resistance," he said. Manoharan said Sali, who was arrested in March last year, is repentant and remorseful. Deputy public prosecutor Faridah Nurdinie Bahrum, who read out the facts of the case, said a team from the Kuala Lumpur police contingent headquarters' Narcotics Crime Investigation Department, comprising an inspector and more than six detectives, raided Sali's rented hotel room. Police found a pair of keys in Sali's possession, and he led investigators to the room. During the search, police discovered a packet containing cannabis wrapped in aluminium foil and reinforced with masking tape on the bathroom floor. The prosecutor said the circumstances established Sali's possession, custody and knowledge of the drugs. Investigations also revealed that Sali had rented the hotel room for a month, with the booking registered under his name using his MyKad. https://www.nst.com.my/news/nation/2026/06/1460578/man-jailed-7-years-10-strokes-cannabis-possession
