A MAN who claims he developed schizophrenia after smoking cannabis is
warning of the dangers of legalising the drug.
Wayne Morgan, 30, from Ffair Rhos, near Tregaron, Ceredigion, says he has
been addicted to drugs for 18 years.
He tells tonight’s Y Byd Ar Bedwar programme, on S4C at 9pm, “Cannabis is a
dangerous drug. The doctors treating me say that’s why I’ve developed
schizophrenia.”
North Wales psychiatrist Dr Dafydd Alun Jones agrees that cannabis can
cause certain mental illnesses. “Over the years I’ve treated hundreds of
drug addicts,” he said.
“Many of those have developed schizophrenia, and I have no doubt that their
condition has been triggered by the use of cannabis.”
But Newport West MP Paul Flynn, a long-time campaigner for the
legal-isation of cannabis, dismissed the claims as “absolute nonsense,”
saying there was no scientific proof of the drug’s link to schizophrenia.
“Cannabis is probably the least harmful drug you can get,” said Mr Flynn,
who wants to see a system in the UK whereby the drug is sold openly in
shops and cafes.
