UK: £3m cannabis found in oranges cargo
Ananova Monday 05 Feb 2001 Police have recovered what they believe to be about =A33m worth of cannabis packed into a lorry carrying oranges. A spokeswoman for the National Crime Squad said two British and two Spanish men are in custody after officers found the one tonne haul. Officers from its branch in Telford, Shropshire, stopped a 40-tonne articulated lorry of Spanish origin late this afternoon on the A5 at Brownhills, West Midlands. She said: "On searching its legitimate cargo of crates of oranges officers discovered 1,145 kg, or just over a metric tonne, of what is believed to be cannabis resin in 5kg vacuum packs." The raid followed a long-term surveillance operation by officers from the Squad, who were following the Spanish vehicle, which originated from Valenci= a.
