VICTORIAN GOVT PROPOSE LIFE SENTENCES FOR DRUG TRAFFICKERS

People convicted of large scale drug trafficking could soon face life
imprisonment in Victoria.

That is one of the new measures the State Government is proposing to
crackdown on those at the top of the drug trade.

Under the Government's proposals, anyone convicted of trafficking more
than 750 grams of heroin, cocaine, amphetamines or a combination of
the drugs, could be jailed for life.

The plan also applies to large amounts of marijuana and other hard
drugs.

The current maximum penalty for large scale trafficking is 25
years.

The Attorney-General, Rob Hulls, says the Government will not tolerate
people who make a living out of the drug trade.

"These proposed measures send a very strong message to the Mr Bigs in
drug trafficking that their life times liberty is seriously at risk if
they continue to trade in death and misery," he said.
