UK: No jail for MS sufferer on drugs possession charge

Wednesday 14 Mar 2001 A multiple sclerosis sufferer escaped a jail sentence last week after a court heard how she had been given cannabis to ease her illness. Croydon Magistrates Court heard how Tamara Morris, 52, from Forest Hill,was caught in possession of a snuff box containing a small amount of cannabis, two slips of LSD and three tablets of ecstasy, when police searched what they thought was her stolen van on January 1. Peter Bonman, prosecuting, said Ms Morris, who lives in Milburn, Forest Hill, had been stopped at 10.20am, on Wellesey Road, Croydon, as she filled a white transit van with petrol. Mr Bonman said police suspecting she was concealing something had searched the van and found the drugs, which they described as a quantity consistent with personal use. Ms Morris told the court: I was given the LSD about two years ago and I never used it. The ecstasy tablets were also given to me but at a party by someone on my college course. I didnt know what they were so I didnt take them.The cannabis I tried because of my illness. I have MS and I had heard that it was quite good for relieving pain but it didnt have any effect on me. Ms Morris pleaded guilty, but after hearing her evidence, district judge Jane McIver gave her a two year conditional discharge. Ms Morris said she had never intended to take the drugs and had tried to contact a drugs helpline for advice on disposal. She also said she had recently bought the van without knowing it had previously been stolen.
