UK: Welsh Lib Dems call for legalisation of cannabis and ecstasy Liberal Democrats Wales News Wales Friday 30 Mar 2001 Commenting on BBC findings that herion abuse is reaching near epedemic proportions in the South Wales Valleys, Gavin Cox the Welsh Liberal Democrats Parliamentary spokesman for the Rhondda has called on the government to immediately redress UK drug laws. "Politicians need to learn to accept that drugs are readily available and, unfortunately, here to stay. This is an issue that won't go away. The longer politicians continue to brush the issue under the carpet the harder the problem will be to solve" said Gavin Cox. "We need more funding for community-based action groups to initiate adiction programmes and address the social problems associated with drug and alcohol abuse, such as poverty, unemployment, and crime. We also need role models, ideally people with an experience of drugs, to teach our children the facts. "Removing the link between soft drugs, such as cannabis and ecstasy, and hard drugs is, to me, an absolute necessity. Decriminalisation through license is, perhaps, the only way this can be achieved. It goes without saying that I support calls for cannabis to be made legal for medical use."
