UK: Rain stubs out cannabis parade

Friday 27 Apr 2001 A cannabis march and festival in London has had to be postponed because of rain. Organisers say the heaviest rainfall in 100 years made the decision to postpone the event unavoidable. The festival site at Brockwell Park, Brixton, is completely waterlogged. More heavy rain is forecast. The event, supporting the legalisation of cannabis, was scheduled for Saturday May 5, but has been postponed until Saturday June 16. The march route, festival venue and times remain the same. The London Cannabis March & Festival is part of a global cannabis action movement in 125 cities. Lambeth Council park officials told organisers the park would be badly damaged if the event went ahead. They said the condition of the ground is so bad the health and safety of those attending could be put at risk. A festival spokesperson said: "It is with great regret that we have come to this decision but we cannot risk the health and safety of our supporters nor do we wish to cause serious damage to Brockwell Park, which is an important local amenity."
