UK: 'Legalise cannabis' grandmother says she failed

Friday 08 Jun 2001 Leslie Von Goetz, the pro-cannabis grandmother who stood for Parliament, said she wished more respectable people had supported her. The 75-year-old campaigned for the legalisation of cannabis for medical use. She said she had received many phone calls supporting her but wanted more non-users to back the campaign. Mrs Von Goetz polled 420 votes in the safe Lib Dem seat of Fife North East, standing under the Legalise Cannabis Alliance banner. She told Ananova her own disability had kept her from getting out to canvass voters. "Quite frankly I had no expectations of this at all because I wasn't really able to do any campaigning," she said. "To an extent I feel I have made a point - some non-users have rung up and supported me. I wanted to get more respectable people behind the cause, and I think perhaps I have failed in that." Mrs Von Goetz, who doesn't use cannabis, said: "I think that it is oppressive when people who could be helped by cannabis are denied it or prosecuted. There are some people for whom it is the only suitable thing to take - they can't get out or do anything without it. It's absolutely atrocious." She said the campaign to legalise cannabis would continue, but she thought it unlikely she would stand at the next General Election.
