UK: Marijuana smokers eat more but don't put weight on
Ananova
Monday 11 Jun 2001 People who smoke marijuana and get food cravings don't put on weight, say researchers. A study has found cannabis users may be able to smoke, drink and eat all they want without piling on the pounds. Researchers led by Ellen Smit at the State University of New York say smoking marijuana induces "the munchies" causing users to consume calories of sweets and junk food. She said in the Boston Herald: "They were eating more. They consumed more calories but their body weight was somewhat lower." She says pot smokers drink more alcohol and are three times more likely to smoke cigarettes regularly than the general population. Ms Smit, who analysed data by the Centres for Disease Control from 1988 to 1994, says she does not know why marijuana smokers' body fat mass index is lower when they consume up to 40% more calories than non-users. She says users of the drug may turn to junk food because it's frequently available.
