UK: Police go soft on cannabis

The radical policy is being piloted in order to concentrate on the fight
against harder drugs such as crack cocaine.

Officers will issue an on-the-spot warning and confiscate cannabis, but the
matter will go no further. If successful the scheme could be extended
across the capital.

Scotland Yard said the new approach could take 10 minutes of a constable's
time instead of the near 10 hours occupied if the person is arrested, taken
to a police station and formally cautioned.

The country's most senior police officer, Metropolitan Police Commissioner
Sir John Stevens, backed the plan, describing it as "an innovative step".

He added: "We are not turning a blind eye to crime but we have to
prioritise. Possession and use of cannabis is not a priority."
