Alcohol - patterns of use
West Australian Wednesday 24 Dec 1997 Survey 1995 . Of the 54,000 Australians surveyed, it was found that in 1995, 24 per cent of Australians were smokers, compared with 28 per cent in 1989-90 and the proportion who had quit smoking rose from 23 to 28 per cent in the same period. Fewer adults nationwide were drinking alcohol, with a big drop in the number of people binge-drinking. In NSW and nationally 8 per cent reported drinking at medium to high-risk levels. Commenting on the survey, Dr Woollard of the Australian Medical Association said he welcomed the figures on smoking and drinking as proof the messages about the dangers of tobacco and alcohol were being heard. But he said the success in cutting heart disease through better diets and reducing smoking and drinking would be undermined by the rise in obesity. In its Australian Wine and Grape Industry report issued yesterday, the Australian Bureau of Statistics revealed that domestic sales of local wines had increased to a record 336 million litres. Among other things the report found that Australians still prefer to drink wine from a cask - 168 million litres compared to 96 million litres sold in bottles. The average consumption for Australians over 18 years was 18.8 litres each in 1996-97 compared to 94 litres of beer.
