UK: Case for full drugs review growing by the day
Simon Hughes The Liberal Democrat website
Friday 15 Jun 2001 Simon Hughes MP, Liberal Democrat Shadow Home Secretary, commenting on the change of policy by Brixton police towards people found in possession of small amounts of cannabis, said: 'The public will fully understand why the police want to focus their resources on the more serious dealers and organised gangs, than the small time users. People are more concerned about serious crimes of violence and crime against others, than small time recreational use of drugs.' 'The case for a full review of drugs laws grows by the day. A change of policy by the police in Brixton is no substitute for a full-scale reassessment of the law. The new Government must be prepared to get real and address these serious matters properly.'
