Minister turns in his son Desmond McCartan Belfast Telegraph Wednesday 24 Dec 1997 offence in London, it was revealed today. The youth was released on police bail while further investigations were made, Scotland Yard said. He went voluntarily with his parent to a police station after The Mirror newspaper contacted the minister about allegations that cannabis had been sold to one of its reporters. Tony Blair was informed of the incident, but Downing Street refused to comment, saying that the matter was sub-judice. The Metropolitan Police refused to discuss any details, including the suspect's identity or age. A statement merely said: "At 1800 hours on Monday, December 22, a male voluntarily attended a police station in London. "He was arrested in connection with suspected supplying of a small quantity of cannabis. "He was subsequently released on police bail to return on a later date pending further inquiries." According to a five- page account in The Mirror this morning, journalists from the paper went to a pub where they bought the drug. The paper stated: "For legal reasons, we cannot reveal the son's identity or the minister's." Editor Piers Morgan contacted the minister, who decided to deal with the matter personally and go to the police. A file will now go to the Crown Prosecution Service. The Mirror said it was tipped off about the son, naming the pub where he drank. "All the Mirror had been told initially was that the boy was the son of a prominent MP; we had no idea who his parent was." The cannabis allegedly bought by the reporter was tested at a laboratory the next day.
