UK: MSPs reissues call for cannabis inquiry

Friday 06 Jul 2001 A fresh attempt has been made to urge the Scottish Parliament to set-up a commission to investigate the use of cannabis in Scotland. Lothians MSP Margo MacDonald has resubmitted her motion urging the move for the third time following calls by the former deputy Conservative leader, Peter Lilley to legalise the drug. When she first tabled her motion in November 1999, it attracted cross-party support from 45 MSPs. The MSP says the time is right for an investigation into the use of cannabis in Scotland. She pointed to the confusion which is arising south of the border on whether police forces are applying the law as it stands against cannabis users. Ms MacDonald said: "This is an unsatisfactory situation which places police officers in an invidious position, damages police and public relations, makes a mockery of our law-making political procedures and undermines respect for our legal system. "The Scottish Parliament's procedures allow it to move quickly than Westminster to tackle this democratic deficit and legal hypocrisy."
