UK: GW astonished by cannabis 'confusion' Rosie Murray-West The Telegraph Saturday 07 Jul 2001 GEOFFREY GUY, chairman of cannabis-based drug company GW Pharmaceuticals,said yesterday that the market had "got hold of the total wrong end of the stick", after a report in the British Medical Journal hit the group's shares. The BMJ report suggested that cannabinoids or cannabis-based medicines were no more effective than codeine when used to treat post-operative pain. However, the report appeared to advocate the use of cannabis-based treatments for neuropathic pain such as rheumatoid arthritis. Dr Guy said the report had been "quite a surprise" because much of the data within it had already been reported. "We are not developing any drugs for the treatment of post-operative pain. The only link between us and the article is that both deal with cannabinoids," he said. He also pointed out that the drugs that GW is producing differ from those discussed in the BMJ article. "Our drugs comprise whole plant extracts of cannabis in an under the tongue spray," he said. "That is quite different from the oral single tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) extracts referred to in the paper." The article pushed GW's shares down 14.5 to 145.5p. "It is astonishing to see this confusion," Dr Guy said. GW Pharmaceuticals floated on the Alternative Investment Market last month, raising £25m at 282p a share.
