UK: Home secretary eases up on cannabis

David Blunkett has eased up on the cannabis policy discussion with a call
for an "adult, intelligent debate" on decriminalisation.

In a departure from his predecessor, Jack Straw's hard-line attitude and
Downing Street's blanket insistence that drugs policy would remain
unchanged following a call for decriminalisation from Conservative Peter
Lilley, the home secretary said that he was interested in the debate but
wanted it to be held rationally.

"There is room for an adult intelligent debate but it isn't, 'Are you for
or against?'. It's let's think, let's consider, let's not be pushed by
articles in newspapers or hysteria."

"I am interested in the debate that is taking place because, I hope, I am
an intelligent human being," he told Sky News on Sunday
