UK: Cannabis conundrum
The Guardian Tuesday 10 Jul 2001 What exactly is going on at GW Pharmaceutical, the Aim-listed producer of high quality cannabis for medical purposes? Just two weeks after its flotation Brian Whittle, the company's scientific director, has acquired 50,000 shares at 127p each, increasing his stake in GW to 11.97%. Given that Mr Whittle's holding was reduced by 2% in the flotation, his purchase appears, to say the least, strange. That said, his dealings probably say more about the performance of GW shares since their debut. Placed at 182p by broker Collins Stewart, they have moved sharply lower - hit by, among other things, a report in the British Medical Journal questioning whether cannabis was actually effective in pain relief. Again, this is surprising, because the float was around six times oversubscribed. GW closed at 126.5p, down 19p, last night.
