UK: Lilley right that drugs law is unenforceable

Simon Hughes MP, Liberal Democrat Shadow Home Secretary, commenting on
Conservative MP Peter Lilley's call for cannabis to be legalised, said:

"We are glad that Peter Lilley has joined those arguing that the present law
is unenforceable and needs to be changed.

"Liberal Democrats have decided to push ahead with the quickest possible
timetable for suggesting a full response to the current law on drugs which
is clearly not working. We will be looking at all aspects of drugs policy
in a wide-ranging, no-holds barred report. We will be holding public
hearings and inviting public evidence after the summer holidays.

"It would be quite wrong at this stage to predict the party's decision, but
I personally think it unlikely that Liberal Democrats will support the
status quo."
