UK: Commons bid to legalise cannabis
Ananova
Wednesday 18 Jul 2001 A move to legalise cannabis is to be launched in the House of Commons. It will be piloted by Labour's Jon Owen Jones who won fourth place in the ballot of backbench MPs to introduce their own measures. The Cardiff Central's Legislation of Cannabis Bill seeks "to legalise and regulate the sale, supply and use of cannabis for recreational and therapeutic purposes". It comes amid growing backbench calls, including from Tory former Cabinet Minister Peter Lilley, for liberalisation of cannabis laws but is expected to be strongly resisted by the Government and stands no chance of becoming law.
