UK: Cannabis legalisation Bill in Commons
ITN
Wednesday 18 Jul 2001 A move to legalise cannabis is being launched in the Commons. It is piloted by Labour's Jon Owen Jones (Cardiff Central) who won fourth place in the ballot of backbench MPs to introduce their own measures. His Legislation of Cannabis Bill seeks "to legalise and regulate the sale, supply and use of cannabis for recreational and therapeutic purposes". It comes amid growing backbench calls, including former Tory Cabinet minister Peter Lilley, for liberalisation of cannabis laws but is expected to be strongly resisted by the Government and stands no chance of becoming law. Mr Owen Jones, with other Private Members' Bill sponsors, is due to introduce his measure at the start of Thursday's sitting under a procedure which does not allow a debate or vote at this stage. It may be debated after the Commons returns from its break in October.
