UK: Cardiff councillor and Police Authority member call to legalise cannabis
The South Wales Echo Thursday 19 Jul 2001 A South Wales Police Authority member today backed increasing calls for cannabis to be legalised. Veteran Liberal Democrat Councillor Jaqui Gasson, who admitted smoking cannabis in the past, said she supported attempts by Labour MP, Jon Owen Jones to bring a Bill before Parliament. Mrs Gasson, a Councillor in Cardiff for 13 years, said she had first smoked cannabis as an arts student. " I have seen it smoked at a festival in Cardiff in the past and no action was taken by the police" she said. "My view is that police officers have more important things to do than chase people smoking pot". Mrs Gasson said that she did not accept the argument that young people would move on to hard drugs if cannabis was legalised. "I believe we should have a licensed system where the sale of cannabis is controlled. This would also get youngsters away from drug dealers who cause so much misery. And people are still going to be smoking cannabis if it is not legalised". Meanwhile, former drugs baron Howard Marks - Britain's most wanted man during the 1980's after smuggling consignments of marijuana around the world - was in Cardiff last night to sign his record company's new album, and also gave his support to Mr Jones' campaign.
