UK: Madness to decriminalise cannabis - lung charity

Ananova

Sunday 12 Aug 2001

---

It would be "madness" on health grounds to decriminalise cannabis, the British
Lung Foundation has warned.

The most common method of cannabis delivery is through smoking and the dangers
of inhaling tobacco smoke are already well known, the organisation said.

The organisation says it has no view on the legal issues concerning the
decriminalisation of cannabis, but feels the debate was ignoring the health
concerns.

"We haven't won the war on tobacco yet. It would be madness to open up a second
front on cannabis," spokeswoman Michelle Di Leo said.

She added: "If MPs send a message that they take cannabis smoking less seriously
than smoking tobacco, that would be very dangerous.

"At the very least cannabis availability would need the same regulations as
tobacco - which includes health warnings on packaging.

"The Home Affairs Select Committee, which is due to undertake an inquiry into
this issue, must also consider the health risks associated with smoking cannabis
if we are to have a mature debate.

"We feel that the health implications are being lost in the debate and are
concerned that MPs, when they consider the issues, don't lose sight of these.

"We are concerned about the dangers to people's health of smoking any substance
- cannabis included."
