UK: MS sufferer s home raided by police
The Orcadian
Wednesday 08 Aug 2001 Multiple Sclerosis sufferer Biz Ivol - who hit the headlines recently over her outspoken views on cannabis use - had her South Ronaldsay home raided by Kirkwall police. The 53-year-old woman said four officers arrived at her home at Herston in South Ronaldsay at 4.45pm on Monday night and took away several items. Mrs Ivol has made national headlines in the past over her bid to see the medicinal use of cannabis legalised, when she has made repeated calls for the police to raid her. However she said Monday evening's events had still come as a shock. "I am all of a quiver. I have been expecting it for a long time, but it still came as an awful shock," she said from her home last night. This is not the first time Mrs Ivol has been raided by police. In December 1997, she was admonished at Kirkwall Sheriff Court after admitting growing 27 cannabis plants to relieve the pain of MS. She says cannabis is the only thing that alleviates the symptoms and stops the muscle spasms. She has supporters across the UK. Police confirmed they had searched a property in Herston, South Ronaldsay, under a warrant issued in terms of the Misuse of Drugs Act. Inspector Paul Eddington said that a number of items had been seized for analysis, adding: "After the outcome of that analysis we anticipate a report will be submitted to the procurator fiscal."
