UK: Hemp Haul Gives "Drug" Raiders The Hump
News & Star, Carlisle
Tuesday 24 Jul 2001 Cannabis smoking thieves who carried out a night-time raid on a field of hemp near Dumfries were left wondering why their loot failed to give them a buzz. The thieves stuffed carrier bags full of weed - only to find they would have to consume acres of the stuff to get high. The crop, used for making clothes and animal feed, is made up of just 0.3 per cent of the hard stuff. Farmer, Rory Young, of Kongeith, Kirkgunzeon, diversified into hemp after losing his stock to foot and mouth. He said: "It might look like the real stuff, but it is not an illegal drug." DC Tommy Rome, of Dumfries and Galloway Police Drugs Squad, said: "A group of people from the area went to the field and stole some of the crop. "They were subsequently reported to the Procurator Fiscal. "The crop is of very low potency," added the detective.
