UK: Labrador is first private nose
The News Online (Portsmouth and the Solent)
Monday 20 Aug 2001 BART the labrador's nose is a high-powered weapon in the battle against crime. He's the country's only working drug detection dog outside police kennels. And the next time you see Bart he could be using his finely-tuned nostrils to protect your favourite nightclub from drug dealers. Bart and his best friend David Lowe, 39, bonded through six weeks of intensive training with Surrey police at their Guildford dog school, among the top police training facilities in the country. Mr Lowe, of Lowe Securities, near Locks Heath, said: 'He's a really lovely dog and totally friendly towards people. 'But he has been trained to have a high drive to sniff out substances such as heroin, cocaine, cannabis or ecstasy.' Movie scenes of snarling beasts tackling drug dealers bear no resemblance to 14-month-old Bart's docile method of detection. 'If he picks up a scent he simply goes to a person and sits in front of them,' said Mr Lowe.
