UK: 'Cannabis plants' off the M25 are hemp, says Home Office
Ananova
Monday 03 Sep 2001 The Home Office has scotched reports that cannabis is growing in fields near the M25. Whitehall officials say the speculation has been fuelled by people finding similar-looking hemp plants. The Home Office is emphasising that hemp contains a very low amount of THC, the ingredient in marijuana that makes people high. People are said to have been breaking into the fields in Essex and stealing the plants, believing they are cannabis. A Home Office spokeswoman told Ananova: "It's highly unlikely that it's marijuana or cannabis. Companies who are licensed to grow these substances grow them in small areas, undercover. "It's much more likely hemp is being produced under licence from the Home Office. So even if people were going in there, they wouldn't be getting what they thought they were getting." But The Mirror has quoted an unnamed drug user as claiming that he thought the plants contained a lot of THC.
