UK: Cannabis ends pain in medical trials

Many patients with multiple sclerosis and spinal injuries have had their pain
ended by medicinal cannabis extracts.

Up to a third of the 23 patients in a UK study reported a significant recovery
from chronic, excruciating pain.

In some cases the pain was wiped out completely but in others the drug helped
them to experience a restful night.

Dr William Nortcutt, who carried out the study, said: "Several patients
experienced a dramatic improvement. In some cases we saw a pain reduction to
zero on a scale of one to 10."

Speaking at the British Association science festival at Glasgow University he
told how cannabis's various different active compounds were tested with a tongue
spray.

The extracts were taken from special plants grown in the UK by GW
Pharmaceuticals, which is pioneering the medicinal use of the drug.

Dr Nortcutt hopes to publish the first findings next year and said most of his
patients preferred milder cannabis preparations with fewer psychoactive
extracts.
