UK: Scores of prisoners using drugs
The News (Portsmouth and the Solent)
Tuesday 04 Sep 2001 UP to a quarter of the inmates at local prisons are getting hold of illegal drugs while behind bars. A report from the Home Office showed that scores of convicts tested positive for drugs including heroin, crack cocaine, cannabis and Valium. Top of the list is Winchester prison, where 89 inmates were caught by random drug tests in 2000-2001 - almost a quarter of those pulled in for the mandatory spot-checks. Winchester's record was even worse than that at notorious inner-city jails like Wormwood Scrubs. Kingston Prison, in Portsmouth, and Albany on the Isle of Wight, also recorded rates in double figures, with more than 60 positive tests between them during the year. Winchester prison bosses today admitted that security levels at the prison had been officially rated `unacceptable' in the past. But they insisted they had successfully bolstered their defences against drugs entering the jail since the figures were compiled.
