UK: Tory contender in surprise policy move

Monday 03 Sep 2001 DUNCAN SMITH IN U-TURN ON GAY LAW AND DRUGS TORY leadership contender Duncan Smith was yesterday embroiled in fresh controversy after making a dramatic U-turn on Section 28 and the laws on cannabis. (snip) He also said that he would "have a look" at whether banning cannabis was the most effective way of tackling drugs. Critics yesterday said the change in policy was a clear sign that Mr Duncan had been "rattled" by accusations that he holds extreme right- wing views. (snip) When asked whether cannabis should be legalised, he said there were people who believed the law should be changed: "I say to them come forward with your case. "If it is a convincing case, then any rational person will seriously look at it. But unless it is convincing, then we have to make do with what we have got."
