UK: GW Pharmaceuticals says cannabis-based drug trials show positive results

Monday 10 Sep 2001

---
GW Pharmaceuticals PLC said preliminary safety and efficacy data from its
Phase One and Two clinical trials of its cannabis-based medicines showed
very positive results.

Of the 53 multiple sclerosis and spinal cord injury patients in the
studies, 41 derived clinically significant benefit, it said.

The data also confirms that the company's medicines have an excellent
safety profile, it added.

It said the data show that active treatments provide superior benefit to
placebo in key outcomes, including pain, overall symptom relief and sleep
duration.

The data show clear trends which support the clinical improvements
experienced by patients whose conditions have been considered intractable
in the face of standard therapy, it said.

In some cases, the improvements have been sufficient to transform lives, it
added.

It said adverse events of the studies have been predictable and generally
well-tolerated, adding most patients are able to separate the thresholds
for symptom relief and intoxication by careful dose adjustment.

GW also said the Medicines Control Agency (MCA) has approved the extended
use of the company's cannabis-based medicines from 12 months to 24 months
treatment.

Executive chairman Geoffrey Guy said: "We remain confident of being able to
present data on quality, safety, and efficacy to the UK regulatory
authorities in 2003, and - subject to approval - bring the first
cannabis-based prescription medicine to market in early 2004."
