UK: Policeman may lose job over cannabis
The BBC Wednesday 12 Sep 2001 A police officer who was fined for possessing cannabis could lose his job, the Old Bailey has been told. PC Ross Callaghan, 34, of Great Banstead, Billericay, Essex, admitted having 4.97 grammes of cannabis resin at the home he shared with his girlfriend. On Wednesday, Judge Gerald Gordon fined him £75. He said the officer had not been in possession of the drug while on duty and he would treat him like any other member of the public caught with cannabis. Integrity test PC Callaghan, who has two commendations for bravery, now faces dismissal after 13 years in the force. The officer, who was stationed at Brixton police station, south London, was cleared of another charge of possessing 17.2 grammes of the drug. In this instance lumps of cannabis resin had been left in a "stolen" car as part of a police integrity test last December. They were not handed in by PC Callaghan, who later dumped them telling a colleague he thought they were lumps of plastic. He had denied knowing they were cannabis and said he had not handled them except in the line of duty. A search of his girlfriend's home was made later and he showed officers a small amount of cannabis kept in a pot pourri jar. Richard Ashley, defending, told the court: "I understand disciplinary papers will be served on him and he is likely to lose his job."
