UK: Cannabis posted to sick mother
The Times
Friday 21 Sep 2001 A MILITARY policeman posted cannabis-filled cigarettes to his seriously ill mother in an attempt to alleviate her suffering, a court martial was told yesterday. Matthew Taylor hid the five joints in a bag with packets of ordinary cigarettes and tried to send them via the British Forces postal service from his base in Paderborn, Germany, to his mother, who was severely disabled after two strokes. A postal official X-rayed the package and alerted customs and the Military Police Special Investigation Branch. Taylor, 30, who had admitted the offence in a letter to the Prime Minister, told the court martial in Colchester, Essex: 'I am a man who has made the mistake of loving his mother beyond the call of duty.' Last night he was on his way back to his mother's hospital bedside in Kirkwall, Orkney, after being dismissed the service.
