UK: Euro-MP demands study into hard drugs 'over the counter'

Sunday 23 Sep 2001

---
A Liberal Democrat Euro-MP has accused his party of abandoning its
principles by not calling for the legalisation of all drugs.

Chris Davies, a North West MEP, called for a Royal Commission to be set up
to examine the practicalities of licensing hard drugs and selling them over
the counter.

He told a fringe meeting at the Liberal Democrat conference in Bournemouth
that although he personally thought drugs were a bad thing, it should be up
to the individual to choose.

Mr Davies said: "I do not want to encourage anyone to take drugs, but I do
want to reduce the harm they do.

"The Liberal Democrats have abandoned Liberalism when it comes to their
approach to drugs. It's a core principle, it's what defines us, it's
something we should be championing."

Mr Davies accused party officials of trying to gag him by removing press
releases about the event before the media could see them.

Also speaking at the event was Labour MP John Owen Jones, who will shortly
launch a Private Member's Bill in the Commons aimed at legalising cannabis
for medical and recreational uses.

Mr Owen Jones said Britain's drug laws had failed to tackle the problems of
abuse and called for fresh tactics. He claimed too much money was being
wasted chasing cannabis users, and this money should be spent on public
services.

He said: "In the past few days, America and Britain have announced a war
against terrorism. They are both countries that have also announced a war
against drugs.

"I sincerely hope we are far more successful in the war against terrorism
than we've been in the last 30 years in our so-called war against drugs."
