UK: Farmer out of joint over thefts
The Times
Wednesday 26 Sep 2001 A FARMER who started growing hemp after the foot-and-mouth outbreak cost him his livestock has urged thieves to stop stealing his crops. Rory Young, 23, had to have his 1,000 sheep and 700 cows culled to try to stop the disease spreading. His family has worked the farm at Kirkgunzeon in Dumfries for three generations and planted the crop rather than let his 250 acres stand empty. Now thieves are threatening his new livelihood by trying to steal his 9ft plants - mistakenly believing that the leaves can be smoked. Mr Young said that they would need at least 8 tonnes to produce the equivalent effect of a single cannabis joint. He added: 'Hemp is visually very similar to cannabis, but you would have to consume vast amounts of it to get even the slightest buzz.' Hemp crops grown for high fibre have had the cannabis properties bred out, making it a stronger plant with more uses.
