UK: Cannabis campaigners take to the streets
Ananova
Saturday 29 Sep 2001 Demonstrators are gathering in central London to call for the legalisation of cannabis. The Cannabis Coalition UK march and rally features speakers such as Labour MP Paul Flynn and convicted drug smuggler Howard Marks. A spokesman for the Coalition says he hopes people will support the rally despite the fear generated by recent events in the US. He said: "The fear of what is going on at the moment may harm the turn-out, but we hope to dispel some of that fear - cannabis is a herb of peace." Demonstrators will be carrying banners displaying the slogan "Bongs - Not Bombs" and handing out copies of the Coalition's newspaper, Properganja, he added. But he also said: "This rally is not just about smoking cannabis, it is also to do with the medical issue and that has very little to do with smoking." The Coalition wants the distribution to be controlled through licensed premises and non- profit cooperatives, which could supply high quality medical cannabis. It also wants the clearing of all cannabis-related criminal records backdated to 1928, the year that the drug was prohibited in Britain. The spokesman said: "The recent progress towards de facto decriminalisation is to be welcomed but it is clearly not the full solution." The march is assembling at Speaker's Corner, Hyde Park at 12 noon, before moving on to Trafalgar Square at 2pm for the rally.
