UK: Proposed London cannabis cafe
BurnitBlue.com
Friday 28 Sep 2001 Proposals have been made to Lambeth council in London to open Britain's first licensed Amsterdam-style cannabis cafe. According to today's Guardian newspaper (September 28), the plan to open three cafes in Brixton, south London has been proposed by pro-cannabis campaigner Tim Summers. He hopes to follow the present six-month experiment under which Lambeth police do not arrest those found with only a small amount the drug. The cafes will only sell small amounts, about 30 grams, of cannabis to customers, and hopes to specialize in a fast takeaway service. Summers told The Guardian: 'We would follow the tested Dutch regulations that mean no advertising, no sale of hard drugs, no nuisance, no alcohol, no sale to those under 18 years and no sale of more than 30 grams of cannabis for each transaction.' 'The idea is to supersede the criminal street trade by being open long hours, and offering a wide choice of resin and herbal cannabis at cheaper prices.' Because Lambeth council is not a licensing authority for cannabis, it's thought that the decision to open a series of licensed cannabis cafes would lie with the Home Office.
